ECFA Accredited Member · 501(c)(3) Registered Nonprofit · Serving East African new neighbors in Louisville since 2003
When the clock runs out, we show up.
When a new neighbor arrives in the United States as a refugee, the federal government provides 90 days of support. Ninety days of housing assistance, case management, basic orientation. Then the clock runs out and they are expected to navigate a new country, a new language, a new system entirely on their own.
Most people don’t realize that. Ninety days.
Gate of Hope exists for what comes after. We walk alongside East African new neighbors in Louisville for as long as it takes, offering trauma counseling, citizenship assistance, driver’s education, language support, mentorship for girls, healing through farming, and care for women rebuilding from violence. We serve more than 900 individuals every year across 20+ programs, in their own languages, in their own community.
Because thriving isn’t a 90-day project. And no one should have to figure it out alone.
$100,000 to fund a year of welcome.
Our annual gala kicks off our biggest fundraising push of the year. The night was a celebration. We’re still working to cross the finish line, and your gift today helps us get there.
Here’s what a gift to GHMI looks like up close.
Covers one trauma-informed mental health counseling group session through the Humura Initiative, where new neighbors process what they’ve carried, in their own language, with a counselor who understands their world.
Helps a new neighbor pass their written driver’s test, one of the most practical and life-changing milestones on the road to independence in a new city.
Walks a new neighbor family through GHMI’s U.S. Citizenship Assistance Program from start to finish: paperwork, preparation, and someone beside them every step of the way.
Funds the Tabara Initiative for one month of mentorship, safety training, and consistent care for East African girls and young women building their futures in Louisville.
What healing looks like at Gosheni.
In 2019, a new neighbor arrived in Louisville with a severely injured left arm. After multiple unsuccessful surgeries and painful physical therapy, she had lost hope of ever regaining its use. Isolated and discouraged, her physical and emotional health were both deteriorating. She came to Gate of Hope.
Though her capacity was limited, we welcomed her into the Gosheni Farm community. She began with small, accessible tasks: pulling weeds, tending the garden with one hand. Gradually, she connected with others who understood her journey. The farm gave her purpose, dignity, and people who understood.
Over time, something remarkable happened. Through consistent physical engagement and the encouragement of those around her, she began to regain mobility in her arm. Eventually, she recovered full use of both.
Today, she is an active, joyful farmer at Gosheni, a living example of how purpose, community, and care can restore body, mind, and spirit.
